About

Mykhailo Mudryk is a Ukrainian left winger who plays for Chelsea FC and the Ukraine national team. Known for his exceptional acceleration, direct dribbling and ability to carry the ball over long distances, he emerged as one of Ukraine’s most highly rated young players during his breakthrough at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Mudryk joined Chelsea in January 2023 following impressive performances in the Ukrainian Premier League and UEFA Champions League. His development in England was inconsistent, although he demonstrated his potential through his speed, transitional threat and ability to create separation from defenders.

His career was interrupted in December 2024 when he was provisionally suspended following an anti-doping test that detected a low concentration of meldonium. An independent commission subsequently imposed a four-year period of ineligibility, which Mudryk appealed.

The proceedings were resolved in July 2026 through an agreement involving Mudryk, The Football Association and the World Anti-Doping Agency. His period of ineligibility was reduced to the time already served, making him eligible to return to training and competitive football with immediate effect.

Mudryk’s transfer to Chelsea made him the most expensive Ukrainian footballer at the time of the move. Chelsea secured him on an eight-and-a-half-year contract after competing with several major European clubs for his signature.

His transfer value was based heavily on his potential, athletic profile and performances for Shakhtar in European competition. His long absence from competitive football has since created uncertainty around his immediate role and current transfer valuation.

Playing profile

Mudryk is primarily a left winger but can also operate from the right or as a central attacking midfielder. As a right-footed player starting on the left, he can attack the outside of a defender or move inside towards goal.

His defining quality is his acceleration. Mudryk can reach high speed within a small number of steps and is particularly dangerous when space becomes available behind a defensive line.

He is most effective during transitions. When receiving possession with room to advance, he can carry the ball over significant distances, move beyond opponents and turn defensive situations into immediate attacks.

Mudryk also possesses the technical ability to combine in tight areas and deliver crosses or cutbacks. However, his decision-making and consistency in the final third remain areas for further development.

His prolonged absence means he will require time to rebuild match fitness, rhythm and confidence. His physical condition, tactical reintegration and ability to secure regular playing time will be important factors in the next phase of his career.

Key strengths

  • Exceptional acceleration

  • Direct ball carrying

  • One-on-one dribbling

  • Counter-attacking threat

  • Progressive carries

  • Movement behind defensive lines

  • Close control at speed

  • Ability to play on either wing

  • Crossing and cutbacks

  • Long-range shooting potential

  • Set-piece delivery

  • High athletic potential
