Ibrahima Konaté is a French centre-back who plays for Real Madrid and the France national team. He combines considerable physical strength with recovery speed, making him well suited to defending both the penalty area and the space behind a high defensive line.
Born in Paris, Konaté developed at Paris FC before joining Sochaux’s academy in 2014. He broke into senior football as a teenager and moved to RB Leipzig in 2017, where he established his reputation in the Bundesliga.
Konaté joined Liverpool in 2021 and won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup during five seasons in England. He moved to Real Madrid on a free transfer in summer 2026, signing until June 2030. At international level, he made his France debut in 2022 and was part of the squad that reached that year’s World Cup final.

Konaté moved from French development football to the Bundesliga at 18, gaining experience in a team that regularly competed near the top of the league.
Liverpool subsequently recruited him as a long-term defensive addition. His move to Real Madrid came after five seasons in England and extensive experience in domestic and European competitions.
Konaté is primarily a right-sided centre-back, although he can play on either side of a central defensive partnership. His game is built around physical power, pace and assertive defending.
He is particularly effective when defending against forwards who try to run behind. His acceleration and stride length allow him to recover ground and compete in situations where the defensive line has been stretched.
In direct duels, Konaté uses his strength to disrupt attackers and prevent them from turning. His height and reach also make him an important presence when defending crosses and set pieces.
He is comfortable stepping forward to challenge an opponent receiving between the lines. This can help his team maintain pressure, provided the defenders around him cover the space he leaves.
In possession, Konaté can carry the ball out of defence and play forward into midfield. His distribution supports the build-up, while his main value remains his ability to protect space and win defensive contests.
