About
Enzo Fernández is an Argentine central midfielder who plays for Chelsea FC and the Argentina national team. A technically accomplished and tactically versatile player, he is known for his progressive passing, vision and ability to control possession from central areas.
Fernández joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 following an outstanding FIFA World Cup with Argentina. He has since developed into one of Chelsea’s senior midfield figures, regularly operating as a deep-lying playmaker, number eight or more advanced midfielder.
His senior career began at River Plate before a productive loan spell with Defensa y Justicia. Fernández then returned to River, established himself in the first team and earned a move to Benfica, where his rapid adaptation to European football led to a British-record transfer to Chelsea.
At international level, Fernández made his senior Argentina debut in 2022 and played an important role in the country’s World Cup triumph later that year. He was named the tournament’s best young player and subsequently helped Argentina win the 2024 Copa América.

Fernández spent only six months at Benfica before Chelsea activated the release clause contained in his contract. The deal made him the most expensive signing in British football at the time.
His Chelsea agreement was structured over an exceptionally long period, securing him to the club until 2032.
Playing profile
Fernández is primarily a central midfielder but can operate as a defensive midfielder, advanced number eight or attacking midfielder. His passing range and tactical understanding allow him to contribute at different stages of the build-up.
One of his defining qualities is his ability to progress possession. Fernández regularly breaks defensive lines through vertical passes, switches play towards wide areas and finds attacking players between midfield and defence.
