About

Luka Vušković is a Croatian centre-back who plays for Brighton & Hove Albion and the Croatia national team. One of the most highly rated young defenders in European football, he combines exceptional aerial strength with progressive passing, physical dominance and a significant goalscoring threat from set pieces.

Vušković joined Brighton from Tottenham Hotspur in July 2026 after an outstanding loan spell with Hamburger SV. His performances in Germany established him as one of the Bundesliga’s leading young defenders and prompted Brighton to make a club-record investment in the Croatian international.

His senior career began with Hajduk Split, where he made his first-team debut only days after turning 16. He subsequently gained experience through loans in Poland, Belgium and Germany before moving permanently to the Premier League.

At international level, Vušković progressed rapidly through Croatia’s youth teams before making his senior debut in 2025. He represented Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and entered the 2026/27 season as one of the youngest regular centre-backs in the Premier League.

Tottenham secured Vušković while he was still only 16, but international-transfer regulations meant his formal move to England could not be completed immediately.

Loans to Radomiak Radom, Westerlo and Hamburg provided him with senior experience in three different European leagues before he entered the Premier League.

His performances in Germany dramatically increased his value. Brighton subsequently agreed a club-record deal potentially approaching €60m including bonuses, with Tottenham also retaining a sell-on interest.

Playing profile

Vušković is a right-footed centre-back whose physical profile immediately stands out. At 1.93m, he combines height and strength with mobility that allows him to defend well beyond his own penalty area.

His aerial ability is one of his defining qualities. Vušković dominates defensive crosses, competes aggressively for long balls and provides a significant attacking threat from corners and free kicks.

He is also comfortable in possession. Vušković can play progressive vertical passes into midfield and has the confidence to carry the ball forward when opponents allow him space.

His experience across several leagues has helped develop his tactical adaptability. He has played within back fours and three-man defensive systems and is comfortable defending both deep and relatively high defensive lines.

Vušković also has unusually strong goalscoring numbers for a central defender. His timing, aerial strength and ability to attack set-piece deliveries make him a consistent threat inside the opposition penalty area.

Although still only 19, he already possesses substantial senior experience and the physical profile required for Premier League football.
