Hato’s development at Ajax was exceptionally fast. He progressed from academy football into the senior team while still 16 and became a regular starter before his 18th birthday.
His leadership qualities also became evident early, with Hato captaining Ajax while still only 17.
Chelsea invested more than €44m to sign him in 2025, viewing his ability to cover both centre-back and left-back as particularly valuable within a squad built around young, technically strong players.
Hato is a left-footed defender who can operate naturally as either a left-back or centre-back. His technical ability makes him particularly suited to teams that build possession from the defensive line.
One of his strongest qualities is his composure on the ball. Hato is comfortable receiving under pressure and can progress possession through carries or firm vertical passes.
As a left-back, he can advance into midfield or support attacks from wide areas. When playing centrally, he provides a natural left-footed passing angle and can step forward with possession to break an opposition press.
Hato is also mobile enough to defend large spaces. His acceleration and defensive awareness allow him to cover behind a high defensive line and compete against quick attackers in wider areas.
Despite his young age, he has already demonstrated strong leadership qualities and tactical maturity. His ability to understand multiple defensive roles has been one of the main reasons for his rapid rise.
