About

Givairo Read is a Dutch right-back who plays for Feyenoord and represents the Netherlands at U21 level. An attacking full-back with strong acceleration, technical ability and creativity from wide areas, he has developed into one of the Eredivisie’s most highly rated young defenders.

Born in Amsterdam, Read developed through Zeeburgia and FC Volendam before joining Feyenoord in 2023. After initially entering the club’s academy structure, he progressed rapidly into the first team and made his senior Feyenoord debut during the 2023/24 season.

His major breakthrough came in 2024/25, when he established himself as Feyenoord’s first-choice right-back and produced impressive attacking numbers from defence. Injuries restricted his involvement during parts of the following campaign, but he returned strongly and has again become an important first-team player.

At international level, Read has represented the Netherlands across several youth age groups and progressed into the U21 national team. He remains one of the leading Dutch full-back prospects of his generation.

Read joined Feyenoord from Volendam in 2023 and initially entered the club’s youth structure, but his development accelerated quickly.

Within less than a year, he had made his senior Feyenoord debut in European competition. By the following season he had developed into a regular Eredivisie starter.

His 2024/25 campaign significantly increased his profile. Read contributed two goals and six assists in 26 league appearances while demonstrating the attacking qualities required from a modern full-back.

Feyenoord responded by extending his contract until 2029, strengthening the club’s negotiating position as interest from major European clubs increased.

Playing profile

Read is primarily a right-back but can also operate as a wing-back and has experience playing on the left side of defence.

His biggest strength is his attacking contribution. Read consistently looks to advance beyond midfield and provides width through overlapping and underlapping runs.

He is particularly effective carrying the ball forward. His acceleration allows him to escape the first defender and attack open space before delivering into the penalty area.

Read also provides considerable creative output for a defender. He is comfortable crossing from wide areas, combining with wingers and playing cutbacks after reaching advanced positions.

In possession, he has the technical confidence to receive under pressure and participate in Feyenoord’s build-up rather than simply playing direct passes down the line.

Defensively, his speed allows him to recover quickly and defend large spaces behind him. His development in positioning and defensive decision-making has also improved as his senior experience has increased.

His combination of age, attacking production and experience at Eredivisie and European level makes him one of the most interesting young right-backs currently playing in the Netherlands.
