Dominik Szoboszlai is a Hungarian attacking midfielder who plays for Liverpool FC and captains the Hungary national team. A powerful, technically accomplished and tactically versatile player, he combines progressive passing and long-range shooting with an exceptional work rate.
Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2023 and quickly became an important part of the club’s midfield. He can operate as an advanced number eight, number ten, wide midfielder or deeper central player, giving his coaches flexibility across several tactical systems.
His senior career began in Austria with Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg before a move to RB Leipzig established him in one of Europe’s leading leagues. His performances in Germany earned him a major Premier League transfer and strengthened his position as Hungary’s most prominent footballer.
At international level, Szoboszlai made his senior Hungary debut in 2019 and later became the youngest permanent captain in the national team’s history. He has since developed into the technical and emotional leader of the Hungarian side.

Liverpool activated the release clause in Szoboszlai’s RB Leipzig contract in 2023. The transfer made him the most expensive Hungarian footballer in history and placed him at the centre of Liverpool’s midfield rebuild.
His 2026 extension followed three seasons at Anfield and strengthened his position as one of the club’s senior players and potential future captains.
Szoboszlai is primarily an attacking or central midfielder but can perform effectively in several positions. He is comfortable as an advanced number eight, number ten, wide midfielder or part of a deeper midfield pairing.
His athletic capacity is one of his defining qualities. Szoboszlai covers large distances, presses with intensity and repeatedly makes forward and recovery runs throughout matches. His physical profile allows him to contribute in both attacking and defensive phases.
In possession, he is capable of progressing the ball through direct carries, vertical passes and switches of play. He strikes the ball cleanly and can create chances through crosses, through balls and deliveries from set pieces.
Szoboszlai is also a major long-range shooting threat. He can generate power with limited backlift and is dangerous from central areas outside the penalty box, as well as from direct free kicks.
His tactical discipline has developed significantly at Liverpool. He can press opposing midfielders, support the right side defensively and adjust his position to create space for teammates.
For Hungary, he carries greater creative responsibility and is regularly the player expected to dictate attacking transitions, deliver set pieces and produce decisive moments.
