Gestifute client Fernandes joins Tottenham

Gestifute client Mateus Fernandes is set to join Tottenham after Spurs reached an agreement with West Ham worth a guaranteed £85m.

David Ornstein reported that Tottenham submitted the highest proposal and the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder chose to join the north London club. Fabrizio Romano subsequently confirmed that the entire £85m is fixed, with no add-ons required to reach the figure.

West Ham have therefore received the price they demanded throughout negotiations. Medical tests, personal-contract formalities and the official announcement are still to follow, but the main agreement is complete.

Tottenham break their transfer record

The £85m fee comfortably breaks Tottenham’s previous transfer record, set when Dominic Solanke joined from Bournemouth for £65m in 2024.

It is a major statement from Spurs and new head coach Roberto De Zerbi. Reports around the negotiations indicate that De Zerbi spoke directly with Fernandes several times, presenting the midfielder with his tactical plan and convincing him to choose Tottenham.

Manchester United also pushed for the Portugal international, but they were unwilling to match West Ham’s fully guaranteed asking price. United had considered a structure containing bonuses, while Tottenham agreed to pay the £85m fixed amount.

Why De Zerbi wanted Fernandes

Fernandes fits the profile of midfielder De Zerbi regularly builds around. He is comfortable receiving under pressure, can carry possession through midfield and has the energy to contribute defensively.

He can operate as a No.8, play deeper in a double pivot or advance into attacking positions. That versatility gives Tottenham different ways to structure their midfield, especially when De Zerbi wants players to rotate and create passing angles during buildup.

At 21, Fernandes is also young enough to develop further. Tottenham are paying for both his current Premier League level and the belief that he can become one of Europe’s leading central midfielders.

His West Ham season drove the price

Fernandes became one of West Ham’s most important players during the 2025/26 season. StatMuse lists him with 36 Premier League appearances, three goals and four assists, including 35 starts and more than 3,000 league minutes.

Across all competitions, public records place him at around 38 appearances, four goals and four assists. He was also shortlisted for the Premier League Young Player of the Season award.

Those numbers do not fully explain his value. Fernandes’ strongest qualities are his ball progression, press resistance, work rate and ability to connect midfield with attack. Even during a difficult season for West Ham, his individual reputation continued to grow.

West Ham secure major return

West Ham signed Fernandes from Southampton in 2025 for a package reported at around £42m. Selling him one year later for a guaranteed £85m represents a major profit.

The club refused to reduce its valuation despite interest from Tottenham and Manchester United. Spurs ultimately accepted the full demand, allowing West Ham to generate funds for a wider squad rebuild.

Fernandes’ value has risen rapidly throughout his career. Sporting developed him before selling him to Southampton in 2024. He then moved to West Ham and is now completing a record transfer after only two Premier League seasons.

Agency angle: Mendes wins another major race

For Jorge Mendes and Gestifute, this is another major Premier League transaction.

Mendes managed a competitive market involving Tottenham and Manchester United, with earlier interest also reported from Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain. The decisive moment came when Tottenham met West Ham’s valuation and De Zerbi convinced Fernandes about the sporting project.

The deal also demonstrates the leverage created when a player has more than one serious option. West Ham could hold out for £85m, Fernandes could assess different projects and Gestifute could negotiate from a position of strength.

Gestifute’s Portuguese network has produced many elite transfers, and Fernandes now becomes one of its biggest emerging-player deals. At 21, he is moving for a fee that reflects both current performance and potential future value.

Tottenham make their statement

Tottenham have not negotiated West Ham down or protected the package through difficult bonuses. They have paid the full guaranteed price to secure De Zerbi’s priority midfielder.

That creates pressure, but it also removes uncertainty. Fernandes arrives knowing the coach wanted him, the club invested heavily in him and a central role should be available.

For FootballAgencies readers, this is the complete agency-market story: competing Premier League clubs, a selling side refusing to compromise, direct coach involvement and Jorge Mendes managing a record deal for another Portuguese client.
