Claes Agency client Tielemans close to Manchester United
Claes Agency client Youri Tielemans is set to join Manchester United after the club moved through the £35m release clause in his Aston Villa contract.
Villa had no desire to sell the Belgian midfielder and offered him a new deal, but the release mechanism has left the club with little control once Manchester United decided to proceed. The move is now heading into the final stage, with United pushing to complete a deal for one of the Premier League’s most experienced central midfielders.
For Manchester United, this is a very different type of midfield signing. Tielemans is not a development bet. He is 29, proven in England, experienced in Europe, a Belgium international and already used to playing in high-pressure Premier League matches.
Villa lose control through the clause
Aston Villa’s position is understandable. Tielemans was not a player they were actively trying to move on. He had become an important figure under Unai Emery, and Villa’s new-contract offer shows they wanted to protect both the player and the asset.
But release clauses change the rhythm of a transfer. Once Manchester United matched the £35m mechanism and Tielemans showed willingness to move, Villa were left with very limited room to block the deal.
That is why this transfer is painful for Villa. They are losing a senior midfielder at a fixed price, not at an open-market auction. In a summer where Premier League midfielders are moving for major fees, £35m for Tielemans gives United a relatively direct route into a player with serious league experience.
Manchester United add control and experience
United’s midfield rebuild has been one of the major themes of the summer. After the Andrey Santos deal and the collapse of the Ederson route because of medical concerns, Tielemans gives United a player who can step straight into the squad without needing a long adaptation period.
He brings passing range, set-piece quality, tactical maturity and Premier League know-how. He is not the most explosive midfielder in the market, but he gives United something valuable: a player who can take the ball under pressure, connect midfield to attack and manage tempo.
Tielemans’ latest Villa season underlined that usefulness. He made 35 Premier League appearances in 2025/26, while reports around Villa’s season credit him with seven assists in all competitions. He also remained central to Belgium, reaching around 90 senior caps and captaining the national team at the World Cup.
That combination of club reliability and international status explains why United moved quickly when the clause became available.
Agency angle
This is an important Premier League move for Claes Agency, the Belgian representation group connected to Tielemans’ career.
Tielemans has always been a player whose career needed careful timing. He broke through very young at Anderlecht, moved to Monaco, became a Premier League star at Leicester, joined Aston Villa on a free transfer and now looks set for another major English move through a release-clause structure.
From an agency perspective, this is exactly where contract planning matters. A release clause can protect a player’s future options while still giving the selling club a guaranteed price. In this case, Villa wanted to keep Tielemans, but the clause gave Manchester United a clean path once the player was ready to move.
For Claes Agency, the deal keeps one of Belgium’s most recognisable midfielders at the centre of the Premier League market.
A smart short-term move for United
Manchester United are not only buying a midfielder. They are buying certainty.
Tielemans knows the league, understands English football, has played in European competition and can take responsibility immediately. For a club trying to rebuild structure in midfield, that matters.
The fee also gives United flexibility. At £35m, Tielemans costs less than many younger midfield targets, while still offering proven Premier League performance. The trade-off is age and resale value, but United appear to be prioritising immediate control, leadership and squad balance.
For Aston Villa, the frustration is clear. They wanted him to stay. They offered a new contract. But once the release clause became active and United moved, the deal shifted away from Villa’s preferred scenario.
If completed, Youri Tielemans will leave Villa as one of the more efficient midfield pickups of the summer and give Manchester United another senior option for a reshaped engine room.
